Mamta - **Health Institute for Mother and Child, New Delhi,* invites proposals from media professionals in *Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra* for *“A Fellowship Program on Young Peoples Reproductive Sexual Health and Rights in India*”*. *
Deadline: 10th February 2010*
The media fellowship program aims to promote public education on young people’s sexual and reproductive health while looking at issues like *right
age at marriage, adolescent friendly health services *and* life skills education*. Effective communication is essential to influence knowledge,
practices and behaviour within the society and simultaneously build consensus on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) issues. This is one of the
important tools in the multi pronged approach towards creating an enabling environment for young people so that they practice safe behaviours and
remain healthy. The fellowship provides a unique opportunity to research and analyze major SRH issues in *Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra*. It would help in building perspectives on identified concerns of adolescent girls and boys in the age group of 10-24 years. These concerns are often underestimated and hence
denied in almost all cultures across the nation. Of all, young people who are married below legal age are the worse affected who often are forced into
marital obligations unprepared and left to learn about health, social and economic complexities only through self-experiences and sufferings.
The proposed fellowship shall translate itself into issue based write ups / op-eds / reports / programmes fostering support and building public opinion
both at the community and policy making level.
*Modality of Fellowship*
The organization shall provide two or more fellowship(s), in 2010. The fellowship would be for a period of 3 months. The fellowship will be granted
to the most suitable candidates by a panel of experts comprised of eminent journalists, academicians and development professionals.
*Key Issues*
1. Early Marriages and Early Pregnancy.
2. Sexuality Education / life skill education.
3. Youth Friendly Health Services.
*Eligibility *
1. A Post Graduate degree in Journalism/Mass Communication/Media studies (desired)
2. Association with Newspaper / News Agency / radio station / news channel
3. Journalists who are citizens of India and have been residing in India for the past two Years. Journalists at the state level are encouraged to apply.
4. A minimum of 3-5 years of experience with focus on Health & Development issues in association with accredited/registered Newspaper or Magazine.
5. Articles could be written either in English, Hindi, Marathi or Telugu.
*Expected Output *
Publication / broadcasting of well-researched pieces which
i. Give visibility to young people’s issues in mainstream media and bring them to the center-stage.
ii. Help shape policy and public debate concerning Early Marriages and Early Pregnancies, need for comprehensive sexuality education, and adolescent friendly health services.
